Excellent ‘Glee‘ actor Cory Monteith died sometime yesterday in Vancouver. The 31-year-old actor, who played the role of principal character Finn Hudson from the start of the show, was staying in a room on the 21st floor of the ‘Pacific Rim Hotel‘ in Canada when he died of supposedly natural causes. Alarm bells rang with hotel staff when he failed to surface from his room after the allotted check out time, and when security were called to investigate, and found him deceased.
Despite his past rehab trips, (the most recent being this April), he had appeared to have conquered his drug problem, which developed when he was just 13, and police on the scene insisted that there didn’t appear to have been any foul play when they discovered his body several hours later. An autopsy will be performed tomorrow.
His publicist Melissa Kates simply said: “We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss.” What makes this story even worse is the fact that he and girlfriend Lea Michele are said to have been planning their wedding in recent weeks, and were due to marry in just a fortnight. Fans of the ‘Fox‘ series (and myself included) feel that his death will put pressure on the show’s producers to cancel the show indefinitely; it simply wouldn’t be the same without him, and one fan described it as being “on its last legs anyway.” The most heartbreaking quote I’ve read today was from another fan on Twitter, who spoke of his passing from Lea‘s point of view: “she went from planning a wedding to planning a funeral.” Truly awful, and very surreal.
